Jacking Procedure

Safe Lifting Procedure for Black Jack Hydraulic Jacks

Proper usage and safety are essential for handling Hydra-Tech’s Black Jack hydraulic jacks. The Black Jack system, designed for ultra-heavy-duty lifting in industries like mining, rail, and construction, requires careful operation to prevent injury and ensure longevity. This guide outlines basic lifting procedures and safety steps for Black Jack equipment, with emphasis on consulting the full Black Jack Operating Manual for detailed instructions.

1. Preparation

  • Inspect Hydraulic Oil: Check the oil level daily to ensure it reaches the green marker on the dipstick with the lifting ram fully retracted. Replace milky or contaminated oil immediately.
  • Stable Surface: Confirm that the load rests on a firm, level surface before lifting. Side-loading or uneven surfaces can cause instability.
  • Positioning: Align the jack’s lifting saddle parallel to the load’s jacking pad. Use a Swivel Saddle if there is a risk of side load.
  • Clearance: Maintain a safe distance from the load, and keep the work area clear of untrained personnel.

2. Lifting Procedure

  • Position the Black Jack: Place it under the load’s jacking pad, ensuring contact points are clean and aligned.
  • Engage Lift: Set the control lever to “Advance,” then engage the toggle switch or open the air valve to raise the saddle. Stop when the saddle contacts the load.
  • Insert Load-Holding Rings: Begin inserting load-holding rings (with the tallest ring first) as the load is lifted. Ensure rings are concave side up, and stack with open sides aligned for maximum strength.
  • Securing the Load: Once at the desired height, release pressure by retracting slightly (¼ inch), letting the load rest on the rings, not the hydraulic ram.
  • Pressure Release: Turn off the motor and move the control valve to “Retract” to release residual pressure. Never use hydraulics alone to support a load; always use certified stands for safety.

3. Lowering Procedure

  • Preparation: Ensure the reservoir can accommodate the hydraulic oil from the retracting cylinder.
  • Remove Load-Holding Rings: Extend the ram enough to remove each ring safely, starting with the shortest.
  • Controlled Lowering: Switch the control valve to “Retract,” and slowly lower the load by engaging the motor.
  • Final Pressure Release: Move the control valve between “Advance” and “Retract” to fully depressurize the system before storage.

4. Maintenance and Storage

Routine maintenance helps keep the Black Jack in optimal condition for high-capacity lifting applications. Ensure daily inspections, perform annual maintenance as outlined, and store equipment in a dry, protected location with the ram fully retracted.
